This is one of the most common questions I get from homeowners who just bought an electric vehicle and are trying to figure out what they actually need. The short answer: it depends on your current panel and how it is loaded, and you do not always need a full panel upgrade.
What a Level 2 EV charger actually requires
A Level 2 home charger runs on 240 volts and typically draws between 32 and 48 amps continuously. To support that, you need a dedicated circuit with the right breaker and wire gauge, and your panel needs enough available capacity to handle it without overloading.
When you do not need a panel upgrade
If you already have a 200-amp service and your panel has open slots and reasonable headroom on your existing load, most homes can support a Level 2 charger without touching the panel. This is the majority of newer homes.
When you do
If your home has a 100-amp service, which is common in older Highland Lakes properties built before the 1980s, you will likely need a service upgrade first. Same thing if your 200-amp panel is already at or near capacity from other large loads like a hot tub, electric dryer, HVAC units, and a well pump all running on the same service.
How to know for sure
I do a load calculation before I quote any EV charger job. That tells me exactly what your panel can handle and whether a 200-amp upgrade needs to happen first or can wait. I will not sell you a panel upgrade you do not need, and I will not install a charger that is going to trip a breaker every time you plug in.
